SSJ Membership Community Agreements

  1. Commitment to a Radical Black Feminist, Anti-Capitalist, Social Justice Praxis:  We commit to a Black feminist and anti-capitalist social justice praxis as a framework and a politic that shapes not only our understanding of how the world is but also how the world should and can be. We recognize that capitalism, patriarchy, white supremacy, and all systems of domination are interconnected and must be challenged together. Our commitment is to collective struggle, care, and the creation of liberatory ways of living that bring forward more just and life affirming futures

  2. Commitment to the Abolition, Reparations, Investment, Safety (ARIS) Framework: The Framework is both an analytic and organizing strategy rooted in Black Study, Black Radical Traditions, and Black Feminist Praxis in order to: 1) define a radical organizing platform (dedicated to abolition, reparations, investment, and safety) for universities, with the understanding that universities are, in fact, prime sites of struggle under the prevailing social emergency 2) encapsulate core teachings and principles of Black Study, Black Radical Traditions, and Black Feminist Praxis in ways that directly inform organizing 3) clarify the situation of, the responsibilities of, and the challenges facing, the Intellectual Worker (Intellectuals must be for their People), and build solidarity among intellectual workers across different university campuses. The ARIS Framework highlights and analyzes the material social conditions of universities, especially as they relate to policing, labor conditions, land relations, debt relations, community relations, curricula, access, theft and the sources of university wealth, gentrification, maldistribution, and investment/divestment.  ARIS insists that universities, especially given their place in the reproduction and concentration of social and economic power, need nothing less than reconstruction because the prosperity and flourishing of higher education is built on a history of enslaved labor and indigenous land seizures. ARIS focuses attention on how present-day university practices of knowledge production, labor control, debt manufacturing, campus expansion, and policing continue to impose adverse effects on marginalized groups, particularly on the surrounding neighborhoods of color.

  3. Mutual Respect: We commit to practicing mutual respect as the foundation of our membership community.
